First you need to find out exactly what your credit rating looks like, there are two companies that can help you out with that:

You will have to apply by post to both of these agencies, giving them your full name, date of birth and your addresses for the past 6 years. Also enclose a cheque or postal order for £2, the cheque being made out to Equifax Europe PLC or Experian Limited according to who you use, it may be beneficial to use both.

The agency must respond within 7 working days of your request, you may wish to send it by registered post.

Once you have obtained your credit rating details you may be able to correct some of the entries on it. In all cases you will have to provide some proof in writing that the entries are incorrect. Typical incorrect entries  may include people who you do not know, addresses you never lived at and credit you never took out. 

There may be information on loans you have taken out in the past that you consider paid-off but are still showing outstanding amounts or defaulted repayments. In these cases you must talk to the lender to try and get the situation resolved.

You can also have a note attached to an entry explaining why you think it is incorrect.

To get further help speak to the loan or mortgage company and your local Citizen Advice Bureau or your Money Advice Center if you have one.
